Edwin (Eddie) Gardner was my friend for many years. We first met in 7th grade in the accelerated 7th grade glass at Beecher Hills Elementary School and then stayed friends through high school and after. I saw him periodically while attending Emory but lost track after I moved to Augusts in 1970 to attend medical school and did not see him again until the reunion in 2016. It was great to see him and get reacquainted and to hear about his family and tell him about mine. I was so saddened at that time by the tregedy that had plagued his family up til then but he was quite upbeat despite all that he had to deal with. I treasured his friendship and was truly sorry I saw so little of him after 1970. When I left Georgia in 1974 to go to the Texas Medical Center in Houston, I truly thought I would return to Atlanta after finishing in Texas, in 1979, but that never happened and so our friendship was left dangling like so many others. He was as steady and constant as a friend that you could ever want. An exceptional person and I mourn so much his passing. I was always confident that he would succeed in his life but just really saddened by the tragedies that struck his family and finally him also. I pray that my good friend will rest easy now and the burdens have been lifted and he can find some peace.

I  have known Eddie since 5th grade,  We have kept up throughout the years,  just not enough.  No matter how long the time apart, we could always pick right back up again.  If anyone deserves to enter the pearly gates it is definitely Eddie.  He had devoted all his time to Eddie Jr. since his stroke and had gone over and beyond what one would exoect. I don't know if any of us could have done so much.  I visited Eddie 3 times while he was at Grady.  The first was the 4th of July when he raised his hands --- the first movement since he was hospitalized.  The next time, his eyes were open and he was moving his toes.  I was so excited.  The last time was after 2 of his bouts with pneumonia.  A slide backward that broke my heart.  I had so hoped he would win his battle.  I am sure he had been fighting so long so he could go backto Eddie Jr.  Unfortunately it was not to be. Eddie fought a valiant battle for his life and that of his son.  Eddie is at peace now with his other son, parents and all who passed before him.

Happy Heavenly Birthday Eddie.  Hope you and Steve are celebrating together.  Your service was nice and attended by so many people.  SW basketball players --- John Burger, Robert Belloir and David Sitton.  Also classmate Cathy (Haynes) Bonner and husband Ben.  Your grands and the grand-nieces and nephews are so cute.  I had a nice "conversation" with one of Andrew's sons. Went to the Fellowship Hall afterwards.  Andrew was taking care of Eddie Jr.  I know they think a lot of each other and Eddie will be in good hands.  Talked with EJ and her girls.  They also visited you in the hospital.  Hope you were able to understand how concerned we all were about you. Also our 7th grade clssmate Marsha Perry (Hughes) came to Grady with me several times  This is not the outcome we had hoped for, but it was God's will.  Pray this mrssage reaches you.

Your Pal,

The Keeper
